Belsnickle hails from German folklore and was brought to America by Pennsylvania Dutch settlers. Unlike the jolly Santa, Belsnickle was known to visit children alone—delivering small gifts to the well-behaved and switches to those in need of improvement. His rugged charm and moral message made him a beloved but formidable part of 19th-century Christmas lore.
