From the Kitchen Table to a Storied Christmas Tradition
Joyce Byers began crafting handmade Caroler figures at her kitchen table, inspired by the joy of Christmas caroling and a desire to capture the warmth of traditional Christmas. Using everyday materials around the house and her background in fashion design, she made the original Carolers as gifts for family and friends to enjoy.
Joyce sold her first Carolers to The Woman’s Exchange in Wayne, PA, who also encouraged other exchanges across the region to carry the figures. What began as a creative holiday tradition gradually evolved into a bustling seasonal hobby — often hectic, but always rewarding.
Recognizing growing interest in the Carolers, Bob Byers Sr. brought a dozen to the New York Gift Show in hopes of finding someone to represent the product. The enthusiastic response quickly launched the figures into national distribution and thus Byers Choice was born.
As demand continued to grow, the family sought to bring in several full-time artisans to help expand the Caroler production. Byers’ Choice Ltd. officially incorporated and what began as a kitchen-table project was now a quickly growing company with a dedicated team.
The Byers family founded the Byers Foundation as the charitable arm of the company, committed to donating 20% of profits to charitable and cultural organizations. Rooted in gratitude for their customers, the Foundation reflects the family’s belief in giving back and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
The first edition of the Caroler Chronicle was mailed to collectors, offering news on product releases, behind-the-scenes stories, and company updates. This printed newsletter helped strengthen the growing bond between Byers’ Choice and its passionate community of retailers and collectors.
Bob and Jeff Byers joined the company full-time, ushering in a new chapter of family involvement and leadership. Their arrival marked the continuation of the Byers tradition, helping guide the company’s growth into the next generation.
To support growing demand, Byers’ Choice moved into its current facility, expanding production capabilities and opening its doors to the public. The new space featured a Christmas Museum and Gallery, inviting visitors to explore festive displays, learn the history of the Carolers, and see artisans at work on the production floor.
Byers’ Choice was honored as the #3 Best Place to Work in Pennsylvania in the medium-sized employer category. The award recognized the company’s commitment to its employees and the positive, family-driven culture at the heart of its success.
Gerald Dickens, great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens, gave his first performance of A Christmas Carol at Byers’ Choice, launching a beloved annual tradition. His one-man show brought new energy to the timeless classic, strengthening the company’s connection to the story that has long inspired its Carolers.
Today the Byers family leads a team of over 40 skilled artisans, still handcrafting each Caroler with the same care and spirit that began at the kitchen table. While the figures are now sold in hundreds of fine stores worldwide, the company remains grounded in its founding values: quality craftsmanship, strength in community, and the enduring spirit of Christmas.
